Trailer brake technology: original parts or aftermarket replacements?

April 17, 2026

Your trailer brakes are worn out and either the MOT inspection or your own sense of safety tells you it’s time for new brake shoes. When searching for suitable replacement parts, you quickly face the classic question: does it absolutely have to be the expensive original equipment (OE) part from the manufacturer, or will a more affordable aftermarket version do the job just as well?

Our 36 years of experience in the spare parts market show that it’s time to clear up a few persistent myths.

The price gap: when original parts become a luxury

Let’s call it what it is: the prices of original replacement parts from well-known manufacturers are significantly higher than those of aftermarket alternatives. If you compare the fact that an original brake shoe set from manufacturers such as AL-KO can easily cost more than EUR 40, while a suitable aftermarket set is already available for around EUR 15, you really have to ask yourself whether the name on the box is worth the extra cost.

The practical answer is: a high-quality aftermarket product is perfectly sufficient in most cases. What’s more: the more aggressively OE manufacturers increase their prices, the wider the door opens for alternatives from the replacement parts market.

The myth of “original safety”

OE manufacturers often subtly suggest that only the genuine part offers maximum safety and guarantees the least wear. Buy cheap, brake dangerously.

To put it bluntly: in the vast majority of cases, that is simply marketing mythology. Trailer brake technology is solid, reliable mechanics – not highly complex rocket science. There are excellent aftermarket products on the market that are absolutely on par with original parts in terms of material quality, braking performance and durability. In most cases, the huge price difference pays for the brand name and the distribution network – not for better braking performance, lower wear or longer service life.

The problem: gambling on white-box products

There is, however, one catch: the replacement parts market is huge and often confusing. As an end customer, it is extremely difficult to separate the good from the bad.

Many low-cost replacement parts online are sold in completely neutral packaging without any recognisable brand label. The major issue: product quality varies significantly. Buy one of these boxes today and you may receive excellent goods from a reputable supplier. Order the exact same part again six months later and suddenly there may be inferior material from a completely different producer inside the box. With unlabelled products, you are often playing a game of quality roulette.

One solution: the Trailer. One “Trusted Aftermarket Product” seal

We asked ourselves: how can we offer you the attractive prices of the aftermarket sector without forcing you to worry about fluctuating quality?

The answer is our new “Trusted Aftermarket Product” seal (TAP) on trailer.one!

What does “TAP” mean for you?

  • Strict selection process: We do not simply approve every cheap aftermarket product. Items carrying this seal come from manufacturers whose production quality we know well and have thoroughly assessed.

  • Tested safety: We examine these components in detail. Fitment accuracy, material strength and braking performance all have to meet our standards.

  • No unpleasant surprises: Wherever you see “TAP”, you can rely on consistent and dependable quality.

Conclusion: OE products certainly offer good quality – no question about that. If you can get them at a fair price, they are a perfectly valid choice. However, they are often overpriced – and in the case of passenger car trailers, you can switch to a high-quality aftermarket solution with complete peace of mind.

With our additional recommendation through the “Trusted Aftermarket Product” seal, you get certified premium quality at the best possible price – and you can rely on your trailer brakes 100%.
