Spare Parts Identification for Trailers: The BPW Part Number as the Equivalent of the AL-KO ETI

Anyone looking for spare parts for car trailers will generally be familiar with the ETI (spare part identification number) used for AL-KO components. It provides direct access to the relevant exploded diagrams and parts lists. However, when it comes to components from BPW Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH, the question arises as to whether there is an equivalent. The short answer is: yes, there is a direct counterpart. At BPW, identification is carried out using the BPW part number (also referred to as the "axle number").

The Function of the BPW Part Number

Within the BPW system, the part number serves the same purpose as the ETI does for AL-KO. It is required to accurately identify spare parts for axles, overrun devices or wheel brakes and to access the exact spare parts lists (ETL).

The BPW part number consists of 10 digits and is usually shown in the format xx.xx.xxx.xxx. It is not a random code, but is based on a logical modular system:

  • Digits 1 and 2: Define the type of component (e.g. axle, drawbar or overrun device).

  • Digits 3 and 4: Indicate the weight range or permissible load capacity.

  • Digits 5 to 7: Identify the exact wheel brake fitted. Number sequences such as 000 or 100 indicate that the component is unbraked.

  • Digits 8 to 10: Represent the sequential production number.

Location of the Identification Numbers on the Component

When looking for spare parts, the identification plate should always be the first place to check. The 10-digit BPW part number is generally clearly stamped on it. The identification plate is riveted to the axle tube or the housing of the overrun device.

In everyday trailer use, however, identification plates can become illegible due to weather exposure, become scratched or even be lost completely. BPW therefore provides a fallback means of identification: in addition to the identification plate, a number is stamped deeply into the metal of the component. This can usually be found on the end face of the axle stub or on the axle body. Using this stamped welding or axle number, a specialist parts supplier can cross-reference the corresponding 10-digit part number and thereby identify the correct spare part.

A final look at the history of the brands explains why the two systems are now so closely related: BPW Fahrzeugtechnik (responsible for car trailer technology up to 3.5 tonnes) was acquired by the DexKo Global Group in 2017. This is the same parent group to which AL-KO belongs. As a result, spare parts for both brands are now frequently handled through the same B2B portals. However, the technical nomenclature remains brand-specific: AL-KO continues to use its 6-digit ETI, while for BPW the 10-digit part number remains the key identifier.
